How to Choose a Credit Card Processor in Wisconsin: 9 Questions to Ask
Choosing a credit card processor is one of those decisions most owners make once and then live with for years. A good choice saves money every month. A bad one comes with surprise fees, a terminal lease you cannot cancel and a support line nobody answers.
Use these nine questions before you sign anything. A trustworthy processor will be glad you asked.
1. How exactly will I be priced?
Ask whether the pricing is flat rate, tiered, interchange-plus or a cash discount program. Ask for the markup in writing. If a rep cannot explain the pricing in plain English, that is your answer.
2. What will I actually pay on my current volume?
A low headline rate means little on its own. Hand over a recent statement and ask for a side-by-side comparison of your total monthly cost, including every fixed fee.
3. What monthly and annual fees are there?
Look for statement fees, PCI fees, gateway fees, monthly minimums and annual "maintenance" fees. Ask which ones can be waived.
4. How long is the contract, and what does it cost to leave?
Many contracts run three years, renew automatically and carry early termination fees. Ask for a month-to-month option, or at least a clear exit if service does not meet what was promised.
5. Am I buying, leasing or getting the equipment free?
Equipment leases are one of the most common traps in this industry. Some run four years, cannot be cancelled and cost far more than buying the terminal outright. Find out who owns the equipment and what happens to it if you leave.
6. Will it work with my POS, software and website?
Make sure the processor works with the systems you already use — your POS, your accounting software, your online store or your scheduling software. Switching processors should not mean rebuilding your whole checkout.
7. How fast will I get my money?
Ask when deposits land in your bank account and whether next-day funding costs extra. For many small businesses, cash flow matters as much as the rate.
8. Who do I call when something breaks?
Ask whether support is local, what hours it is available and whether you get a named contact. When a terminal goes down during your busiest hour, an answering service is not much help.
9. How do you handle chargebacks and security?
Ask how disputes are handled, what they cost and whether the processor helps you fight them. Ask what security features are included, such as chip readers, tap-to-pay and tokenization for online payments.
